The Profession - Geoscientists at workMany people do not know how reliant our society is on Earth Sciences. Most people have no comprehension of what geoscientists in all their diversity actually do. Only geoscientists themselves are able to adress this problem by public outreach and, thus, generate the interest for the profession which is necessary to satisfy the demand for well educated geoscientists by the industry and society.
Photos tell more than words. Here Loic Labrousse (ISTEP UPMC, France) logging a section of unconsolidated sediments on the New Siberian Islands.

Life in a Geo(land)scape -
Everything is dependent on geology, if of advantage or disadvantage to our society. From the crops growing on the field via transportation routes and energy to natural disasters, our life is ruled by and dependent on geology. But what in one case is a constraint is also the basis for our societies' success.
geology as constraint and a pontential
Photos tell more than words. Here a view from the former coast artillery base on the island of Måssten towards Understen lighthouse in the Swedish Baltic archipelago. A ship - the sea as transport route. A lighthouse - the shallow waters and islands emerging from the sea by land elevation after the last ice age as danger to it - but also protecting the land and country as a major defense line during the cold war.
The "Geoscapes" gallery will open in winter 2012/13!
